Philip Merrill College of Journalism students regularly land school-year internships at such prestigious media outlets as National Geographic, Discovery, Washingtonian magazine, network and local TV news stations, SiriusXM, WTOP and WBAL radio stations, The Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and USA Today, McClatchy-Tribune News Service, Comcast SportsNet and ESPN.

Additionally, students find opportunities in Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami, Indianapolis, Tampa and elsewhere during summer and winter breaks, at publications including NPR, the Indianapolis Star, Reuters, Miami New Times, CBS, NBC, ABC,  FOX news, FOX sports, Cosmopolitan, More and Good Housekeeping magazines.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to seek out multiple internship opportunities — for academic credit, as part-time paying jobs, or both. Undergraduate journalism majors are required to take one internship and its accompanying credit (JOUR396); they may also apply two other internships toward elective credits (JOUR199).

  • Master’s students enrolled in our 12- to 15-month program are encouraged to take at least one internship and can earn credit through an accompanying course.
  • Information about internships and job opportunities is sent out regularly by the internship director to current journalism majors on our undergraduate and graduate listservs. Job opportunities are also regularly posted on the college’s Facebook page.

Job and internship listings and contact information can also be found in the building on bulletin boards on the first and second floors of Knight Hall and in the blue three-ring binder in the waiting room of 1100A of Knight Hall.

In addition, every fall the college hosts a Career Fair, which attracts dozens of recruiters seeking to hire for internships and jobs.
