As part of a public university, we rely on a range of revenue sources, including state funding, student tuition, research grants, private gifts and income from endowment.  It is private gifts – for current use and for endowment—that help us maintain the margin of excellence needed to remain a top journalism program.  Generous gifts from alumni, parents, faculty and friends support student scholarships and fellowships that bring energetic, bright scholars to campus; create centers of scholarship and practice; support the construction of our new, state-of-the-art building; and endow scholarships that will assure Merrill has a vibrant student body for generations to come.

  • Dean’s Fund for Excellence – The Dean’s Fund allows the college to respond to opportunities and pressing needs.
  • Scholarships and Fellowships – Contributions to student aid help us recruit and retain top students, and ensure that Merrill remains financially accessible to high-achieving students of all backgrounds. (We continue to invite donations to the scholarship fund established in memory of our beloved Merrill College professor, Penny Bender Fuchs.)
  • Faculty Excellence – Merrill’s faculty is comprised of distinguished journalists and scholars who teach and mentor our students.  Private support helps us narrow an ever-widening gap in salaries offered by our private peers as we seek to attract and retain top faculty.Screen Shot 2015-07-21 at 1.06.07 PM
  • Endowment – There is no greater gift than those to endowment because they are maintained in perpetuity. To ensure Merrill College will still thrive 200 years from now, only the earnings of endowment gifts are spent; the principal cannot be spent.  Endowment income supports the majority of Merrill’s student scholarships and fellowships, and an increasing number of professorships.
  • Capital News Service (CNS) – Capital News Service is a student-powered news organization run by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. For more than 25 years, CNS has provided deeply reported, award-winning coverage of issues of import to Marylanders. With bureaus in College Park, Annapolis and Washington run by professional journalists, CNS delivers news in multiple multimedia formats via partner news organizations, a destination Web site, a nightly on-air television newscast on UMTV and affiliated social media channels (including Twitter and Facebook). CNS provides breaking news coverage, in-depth investigative and enterprise journalism, and serves as a laboratory for students to test and develop innovative new methods of reporting and telling stories. CNS provides a powerful and enriching student experience.
  • Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism – The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism serves Philip Merrill College of Journalism students and professional journalists, as well as the university and greater community through its panels, workshops and support of the college’s academic offerings as well as research and analysis. Shirley Povich was an eyewitness to the most significant sporting events of the 20th century and his fearless reporting took on questions of race, religion and gender. The Povich Center hopes to lead a new generation of sports journalists to view and chronicle events in sports.
