COLLEGE PARK (9/12/18) — Katie Aune has been named assistant dean for external relations at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

Her first day at the university will be Oct. 1.

Aune most recently was development director for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, where she led that nonprofit organization’s fundraising efforts.

She previously raised money for the National Geographic Society and oversaw alumni engagement and annual giving for the Chicago-Kent College of Law at Illinois Institute of Technology.

“Katie’s experience in university development and alumni relations — as well as her more recent experiences developing support for journalists — will help Merrill College as it pursues new initiatives and grows student scholarship support,” Dean Lucy A. Dalglish said.

Before moving into fundraising and development, Aune practiced law in Chicago.

She holds a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and a Master of Laws in taxation from Northwestern University School of Law. She earned a B.A. from the University of Iowa.

Aune steps in following the summertime departure of former assistant dean Lele LeVay Ashworth, who spent four standout years as Merrill College’s development officer.
