COLLEGE PARK (4/10/19) — Two University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism students received the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts’ Best of Festival award this week.

Austin Kleber and Lauren Koenig shared the award for “Underwater Halloween,” a broadcast package produced last fall for Capital News Service‘s nightly news show, “Maryland Newsline.”

The story shows how one man with a love for Halloween and scuba diving created an underwater haunted house and pumpkin carving competition in Frederick County, Maryland.

The broadcast bureau is directed by Merrill College faculty member Sue Kopen Katcef (’76) who plans to retire after this semester.

The Best of Festival winners were selected from more than 1,500 entries submitted by over 300 colleges and universities.
