COLLEGE PARK (4/9/19) — University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism students won 17 categories last week in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 2 Mark of Excellence Awards.

The winners, announced over the weekend in Ocean City, are now in the running for national honors. They will compete against winners from SPJ’s other 11 regions and national winners will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism conference in San Antonio.

Projects by Merrill College students — including those published by Capital News Service, The Diamondback and broadcast on UMTV — were also named finalists in 20 categories.

SPJ’s Region 2 includes Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware, North Carolina and Virginia.

Entries “are judged by professionals with at least three years of journalism experience,” according to SPJ.
