COLLEGE PARK (12/2/19) — Some veteran reporters wait years to cover a national political convention.

Next summer, about a dozen Merrill College students will have the rare opportunity to cover either the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee or the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Merrill is one of the few journalism schools in the country whose students get credentials to attend the conventions, so this is truly a unique learning experience.

The cost to send students to cover both conventions is about $25,000, which includes transportation, housing, meals and convention costs such as press work space, electricity and internet.

Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise $10,000 of that $25,000, and to get things started, Rob Doherty ’79 matched the first $1,000 of donations. The giving portal will be open until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Gifts in support of the University of Maryland are accepted and managed by the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., an affiliated 501(c)(3) organization authorized by the Board of Regents. Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Please see your tax advisor for details.

UPDATE: Thank you to the 62 donors who helped the college raise $7,497 toward CNS’ trips to the 2020 national conventions.
