Join the Philip Merrill College of Journalism as we celebrate George Solomon‘s impact as director of The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism and wish him well as he retires this spring.

Emceed by Scott Van Pelt, it will be an evening of stories from students, alumni and former colleagues about the impact George has had on their lives and on the world of sports journalism.

Proceeds from the event will support the new George Solomon Endowed Chair in Sports Journalism and will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Povich Center.

Hotel information

The following two hotels are closest to the College Park campus:

College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center
3501 University Blvd E.
>> 10-minute walk from Riggs Alumni Center. Also offers free parking and a shuttle to and from campus.

The Hotel at the University of Maryland
7777 Baltimore Ave.
>> 22-minute walk from Riggs Alumni Center. Paid self and valet parking available and offers a shuttle to and from campus.

Transportation Information

Metro: College Park is accessible by taking the Green or Yellow Line to the College Park Metro Station. From there, the 104 shuttle bus runs to campus every 10-15 minutes, stopping at Regents Drive Garage, a 10-minute walk from Riggs Alumni Center.

Amtrak: The closest Amtrak station is at New Carrollton, from where you can catch an Uber/Lyft or taxi to campus. The drive is about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic. Another option would be Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, from which you could take the Metro to campus, taking the Red Line to Fort Totten and transferring to the Green or Yellow Line.

Parking: A campus parking map is available here. Lot Z is adjacent to Riggs Alumni Center and free after 4 p.m.

Airports: College Park is most easily accessed from Washington’s Reagan National (DCA) or Baltimore Washington International (BWI). The Metro Yellow Line runs straight from DCA to College Park.
