WASHINGTON (8/8/18) — A team of University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism faculty members have won a $35,000 grant from the Online News Association to conduct an innovative data journalism experiment.

The grant, among 13 awarded to teams from universities across the country, was made as part of the association’s Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education.

The association announced winners Wednesday during the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference. The Merrill College team includes Capital News Service data editor and director Sean Mussenden, data editor Adam Marton, assistant professor Krishnan Vasudevan, Ph.D. student Brooke Auxier and Wide Angle Youth Media executive director Susan Malone.

Youth producers from Wide Angle Youth Media and Merrill College students are also expected to participate.

The team plans to test a model for community data journalism, their grant application says.

High school, college and professional journalists will “work with renters in low-income housing communities in Baltimore and Prince George’s County to construct and deploy temperature sensors in their apartments to look for violations of city and county rental laws that require landlords to keep rental properties above a certain temperature in the winter.”

The faculty members are testing whether involving residents in creating and deploying the technology increased their engagement with journalism that comes from the project.
