Journalism Interactive Promises Real-World, Hands-On Training

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Aug. 17 – The program for Journalism Interactive 2017 is out, with a lineup of more than 40 accomplished speakers, two dozen sessions and hands-on-training designed to help journalism educators stay at the forefront of digital storytelling.

Speakers represent a diverse mix of media companies and universities, including The Washington Post, Google, Pro Publica, ESPN, NBC4 and more.  Hands-on training sessions will help attendees learn how to shoot and edit 360-degree video, get more out of social analytics, up their data visualization skills, tell stories with SnapChat and develop lesson plans for news verification and other crucial journalism skills.

The sixth annual Journalism Interactive conference takes place Oct. 20 and 21 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center adjacent to the University of Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C.  It is sponsored by the Knight Foundation, hosted by Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, and jointly planned with partner schools, including the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and the University of Florida’s School of Journalism and Communications.

J/i is designed to help educators learn new teaching methods and explore best practices for digital news technologies.  The event features both hands-on training and lively dialogue about teaching media skills, including immersive video storytelling and fact-based journalism in the age of social media. A key focus this year will be how educators are responding to the rapid spread of “fake news.”

  • Dana Priest, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The Washington Post and Knight Chair in Public Affairs Journalism at Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism
  • Aaron Gilchrist, morning news anchor, NBC4 TV
  • Dan Sullivan, senior research scientist and director of “user happiness” at Google
  • Kevin Blackistone, ESPN commentator and professor at Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism

Journalism Interactive Conference: An Extraordinary Event.

Screen Shot 2014-04-07 at 10.52.07 AMCOLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Journalism Interactive Conference may be history but it will continue to have real impact going forward. The two-day conference focused on journalism education and digital media. It was held April 4-5 at the University of Maryland was hosted by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, the University of Florida, and the University of Missouri.

Sessions ranged from drones to top tech trends, mobile journalism, managing change in journalism to a law clinic for journalism school editors and teachers. Attendees got to test out Google Glass, learned about innovative storytelling tools, got the latest on entrepreneurial journalism (Merrill student group Stories Beneath the Shell won the pitch contest!) and even discovered ways of using big data to find story ideas.

As Merrill College Dean Lucy Dalglish put it, “The Journalism Interactive conference Friday and Saturday hosted by Philip Merrill College of Journalism was extraordinary. I hope you’re as proud as I am about the caliber of the speakers, attendees and programs.”

Journalism Interactive Conference Looks to the Future of Digital News

JILOGOSMALLinsertCOLLEGE PARK, Md. – The third annual Journalism Interactive Conference (J/i) is coming this April – with a focus on finding new ways of teaching, reporting and producing digital news.

The two-day digital media conference is set for April 4 and 5 at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism in College Park.

Merrill College Dean Lucy Dalglish says, “J/i is a great way for journalism educators and students to get involved with discovering new ways of teaching, reporting and producing digital news. We’re happy to once again host this event with our partners from the University of Florida and University of Missouri.”

Dalglish says key themes for the 2014 conference include entrepreneurship, mobile journalism, data, video and engagement. “J/i will feature more than 20 different sessions,” she says. “Speakers include leading digital media educators and top multimedia journalists from the New York Times, CNN, Washington Post, NPR and other news outlets.”
