Home News Job Openings: Apply Today for Howard Center Director, CNS Bureau Director, Howard Center Data Journalist Positions

The University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism currently has four exciting job openings with time remaining to apply.

The college is searching for a new director of its award-winning Howard Center for Investigative Journalism, a new bureau director for Capital News Service and two data journalists for the Howard Center.

Learn more below.

Director, Howard Center for Investigative Journalism

Merrill College is seeking a director to lead its Howard Center, which was named a Pulitzer finalist in investigative reporting in 2025 for a national collaboration with The Associated Press and Frontline. Funded by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Howard Center has consistently produced projects that have won national awards, including a medal from IRE, while training the next generation of watchdog journalists. We are looking for someone with the vision, skills, ideas and commitment to continue fulfilling that dual mission.

Best Consideration Date: Sept. 24

Bureau Director, Capital News Service

Merrill College seeks a director for one of its Capital News Service bureaus — either in Annapolis or Washington. Founded in 1990, CNS is the college's nonprofit, student-powered news organization with offices and news teams in Washington, Annapolis, College Park and Baltimore. Reporters, editors and educators with experience teaching, editing or mentoring student journalists or young reporters are encouraged to apply. This is a nine-month, non-tenure track renewable lecturer position to start no later than January 2026.

Best Consideration Date: Sept. 24

Data Journalist, Howard Center for Investigative Journalism

Our Howard Center is seeking two full-time data journalists to join our team. The new hires will lead workshop sessions, mentor interns or early career journalists, develop training materials, work on the Howard Center's data-driven investigative journalism, and collect, clean and maintain structured data sets and document collections gathered by the center for public use, among other tasks.

Best Consideration Date: Sept. 21
