Povich Center’s ‘Creating Camden Yards’ to Air on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network

Oral History Documentary Will Premiere on MASN on Monday, June 1

COLLEGE PARK — “Creating Camden Yards,” an oral history documentary produced by The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, will make its broadcast premiere on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) this June.

The documentary, which is part of a larger multimedia project exploring the people and events behind the Baltimore Orioles’ ballpark, will debut on MASN at 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1. The 90-minute program will air on the network six more times in June. MASN is the exclusive broadcast partner for the Orioles.

Student journalists conducted interviews with more than 60 key figures in the story of Camden Yards as part of the oral history project, which took more than a year to complete. The documentary guides audiences through the pivotal moments that shaped the ballpark.

“‘Creating Camden Yards’ is the story of an iconic ballpark told in the voices of the people who imagined it, fought for it, built it and won baseball games in it,” said Mark Hyman, director of the Povich Center. “We're proud of our sports journalism students who preserved an important chapter in baseball history and pleased to share the documentary with a MASN audience.”

Hyman and Merrill College graduate Josh Panepento ’25, who worked on the project, will discuss the documentary on the Orioles’ pregame show on MASN on Friday, May 29, ahead of the 7:05 p.m. game against Toronto Blue Jays.

Interview subjects featured in “Creating Camden Yards” include Orioles owner David Rubenstein; Camden Yards principal architect Joe Spear; former Orioles Vice President of Planning and Development Janet Marie Smith; former Orioles broadcaster Jon Miller; and former Orioles players Rick Sutcliffe, Ben McDonald and Joe Orsulak, all of whom were featured on the Orioles’ roster for the first game at Camden Yards in 1992.

Hyman and Sandy Banisky, a retired professor of journalism at Merrill College, covered the development of Camden Yards as Baltimore Sun reporters, and they led more than two dozen students in reporting. Nathan Stevens, broadcast production lecturer at Merrill College, led video production. Kate Yanchulis, assistant director of the Povich Center, and Andy Knobel, a freelance editor and former Baltimore Sun deputy sports editor, also contributed to the project.
