Diego Torrealba
diegojto@umd.eduHoward Fellow Diego Torrealba is a Venezuelan-American data journalist and graduate student curious about everything at the intersection of computer science, data analysis and journalism. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s of journalism and a certificate in computer science. Torrealba is particularly interested in using technology and data techniques to bolster accountability journalism, increase public trust in media, and create tools for journalists and newsrooms.
Torrealba has produced multimedia content, covering topics ranging from government and public safety to social issues and culture. At UT Austin, he did videography and wrote newsletters for The Daily Texan, the university’s student newspaper; edited and fact-checked podcast scripts for The Drag, the university’s audio production house; and served as a data fellow and technician for the Media Innovation Group, a data journalism initiative housed in the journalism school.
Prior to becoming a Howard fellow, Torrealba first became involved with the Howard Center as a data journalism summer intern through the Dow Jones News Fund. As an intern, he laid the groundwork for a national, multinewsroom investigation by providing data-backed insights and research. Now a Howard fellow, Torrealba looks forward to continuing his existing project and many more, all while reinforcing his skills as an investigative data journalist.
