Gary Bender ’02

Gary Bender ’02 is a proud alumnus of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. He has over 20 years experience in the world of TV news and sports.

He started as an intern at the George Michael Sports Machine (NBC4 Washington) during his junior year of college. After another internship at FOX5 in Washington, D.C, and graduating from UMD, he became an assignment editor and spent seven years at FOX5.

Since then, he has worked at CNN, Comcast SportsNet and ESPN. He is currently a crewing manager at Program Productions, the country’s leading live sports event staffing company. He works closely with networks from around the country for NHL, NBA and MLB productions along with Big Ten Network for all their broadcasts in College Park. He lives in Sykesville, Maryland, with his family. He enjoys playing hockey and golfing in his free time.
