COLLEGE PARK -- Graduating senior Brendan Hartlove will be the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism’s Spring 2021 student commencement speaker, Dean Lucy A. Dalglish announced Tuesday. Hartlove was selected in a vote by Merrill’s graduating seniors.
Merrill College’s virtual commencement ceremony will go live on Thursday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at commencement.umd.edu. It will also appear that same day on the college’s website, merrill.umd.edu.
Hartlove is a journalism major from Ellicott City, Maryland. With a passion for sports, he called over 100 games as a play-by-play broadcaster for WMUC Sports radio and Big Ten Network+. He was recognized as the fifth-most outstanding collegiate sportscaster in the nation in the 2020 Jim Nantz Award competition -- the highest ranking for a University of Maryland student in the history of the award.
As a junior and senior, he served as station director for WMUC Sports. Hartlove’s work has extended beyond the broadcast booth. He worked for Major League Soccer’s D.C. United during the 2020 season, serving as a digital video production intern.
After graduation, he plans to continue exploring the world of sports, either in broadcasting or communications.
