COLLEGE PARK (5/18/20) — The University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism’s Capital News Service won 13 awards and had 12 students recognized in this year’s Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia Press Association contest.
CNS, staffed by Merrill College students and led by faculty members, competed against professional news organizations in the annual contest. Student work was entered in Division O, for online-only news organizations.
CNS won eight first-place awards, including for General Website Excellence. In the Features Video category, students Caitlyn Mateik and Liam Harrington took both first place in Division O and won Best of Show across all divisions for their ViewFinder story on Harford County police training to respond to mental health calls.
Student Natalie Jones won two awards for her story “Maryland youths needing psychiatric care find long waits, drives,” taking first place in Investigative Reporting and second place in Medical/Science Reporting.
