Katy June-Friesen is a doctoral candidate whose research focuses on news coverage and public discourse surrounding redevelopment and gentrification. She is associate director of communications and research for the Small Business Anti-Displacement Network, housed at the University of Maryland's National Center for Smart Growth. K
June-Friesen has more than 20 years of experience as a writer, editor and multimedia producer for nonprofits, higher-ed institutions, documentary projects and news outlets. Her journalism has appeared in Humanities magazine, Smithsonian magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, No Depression music magazine and Current, the nonprofit outlet covering public media. She served as managing editor of Journalism & Communication Monographs under editor Dr. Linda Steiner (Merrill College associate dean) and has worked as an academic editor and grant writer.
