Munkhchimeg (Muugii) Davaasharav
Munkhchimeg Davaasharav’s research explores the intersection of gender, political communication and news media. Her work examines how women politicians are portrayed in journalism and how institutional dynamics within the media and politics shape these representations.
Before joining Merrill College, Davaasharav earned a master’s degree in Gender and Media from the University of Sussex as a Chevening Scholar. She began her journalism career in 2008, reporting for leading Mongolian daily newspapers and contributing to international outlets including Reuters and The Guardian. She later became a journalism trainer and media consultant, leading gender-ethical and inclusive media initiatives supported by organizations such as UNFPA, UNDP and UNESCO. Most recently, she co-founded Room24.mn, Mongolia’s first community-driven feminist media platform, and led the News for Equality project, which brought together over 300 journalists to improve the visibility and fair portrayal of women politicians in news.
Her academic and professional work is rooted in a commitment to bridging feminist media theory with newsroom practice, using research to inform and transform the ways media represent women in politics.
