Yara Mabrouk
Yara Mabrouk is a native of Egypt and a Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism. She earned her M.A. in Digital Media from London South Bank University. Her research focuses on gender and media studies, examining technology-facilitated gender-based violence, the visual representation of women in war and digital news dissemination models such as TikTok. She employs multimodal discourse analysis to explore the semiotics and sociocultural implications of these emerging formats.
Mabrouk previously worked as an assistant lecturer at the British University in Egypt, where she co-taught courses in TV documentary and production. Her professional experience spans media production workflows, program production and documentary filmmaking. She has worked with international outlets such as BBC Arabic in Cairo, where she served as a radio producer, and Sharjah TV in the United Arab Emirates, where she gained experience in television presenting. She has also collaborated with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on research and feature-based projects documenting NGO activities in Egypt. At Merrill College, she serves as a research assistant and teaching assistant, co-teaching undergraduate media literacy courses.
