COLLEGE PARK — David Ginsburg, a 1975 alum of the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, has made a $50,000 gift to the school to establish the David Ginsburg Family Endowed Scholarship in Journalism.
The scholarship will support Merrill College undergraduate students in good academic standing. The gift will be unlocked March 4 on Giving Day, the university’s annual 24-hour fundraising event, once 125 people have donated to Merrill College at go.umd.edu/GivingDay.
“Upon receiving my journalism degree from Maryland, I enjoyed a lengthy and fulfilling career as a sportswriter,” Ginsburg said. “My hope is that each recipient enhances the reputation of the school’s excellent journalism program and, like me, goes on to flourish in his or her selected field.”
Ginsburg, known as the dean of Maryland sportswriters, retired in 2021 after a 37-year run with The Associated Press. After providing coverage of the Washington football team for AP from 1983-89, he spent three decades as Maryland sports editor covering the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens, the Maryland Terps and Navy in addition to major local and national events. He continues to assist with coverage on a part-time basis in retirement.
He covered everything from Super Bowls to World Series to Stanley Cup playoffs to the Olympics during a career that also included stops at The Evening Star (Washington, D.C.) and The Prince George’s Sentinel.
“We are so grateful to David Ginsburg for his generosity to support Merrill College students,” Dean Rafael Lorente said. “As we launch our Forward campaign efforts, our top priority is to fulfill our Merrill Made Promise — ensuring more students can access our world-class journalism education and all our students can take advantage of the experiential opportunities we offer at Merrill College. David’s gift makes a big difference toward fulfilling that goal and will help students follow his path to success.”
