Shirley Povich Sports Journalism Summer Camp

The Shirley Povich Sports Journalism Summer Camp has become one of the most popular camps for high school students interested in sports media. Students are taught by professionals in the field and gain valuable hands-on, real-world experiences.

Held annually in July, the summer camp is for high school students entering grades 9-12 and attracts students from all across the country.

The 2024 summer camp will be held July 8-12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Knight Hall on the University of Maryland campus. Our camp is full and registration is now closed.

Monday, July 8

9-9:30: Arrival / Check-in / Breakfast 

9:30-10: Welcome

10-11(split group): College Tour with Brendan Hartlove, Program Coordinator of Undergraduate Recruitment 

10-11 (split group): Icebreaker 

11-Noon: Sports Media Overview with Former Povich Campers

  • Reese Levin, Orioles Producer, WBAL Radio

Noon-12:30: NBA Africa Presentation with Mark Hyman, Director, Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism 

12:30-1:30: Lunch at South Campus Diner

1:30-2: Leave South Campus Diner and Walk to Jones Hill House

2-2:45: Tour Jones Hill House

2:45-3: Explanation of camp stories with Kaitlyn Wilson and Kate DeBlasis, Communications Visuals Coordinator

3: Dismissal

9:30-11: Pardon The Interruption with Daniel Lyght, ESPN 

11-12: Sports Writing with Kevin Blackistone, Professor of the Practice, Merrill College

12-1: Lunch at Stamp Student Union

1-3: Sports Video Production with Alex Flum, Sports Anchor/Reporter, DC News Now, Merrill Adjunct 

3: Dismissal 

 

Wednesday, July 10

9-9:30: Arrival / Check-in / Breakfast / SportsCenter 

9:30-11: Sports Analytics with Derek Willis, Lecturer in Data and Computational Journalism, Merrill College

11-12: Social Media, Alexander Pyles, Associate Dean, Merrill College

12-1: Lunch at Stamp Student Union 

1-1:30: Walk to Xfinity

1:30-2:30: Tour Xfinity with John Sinnett, Assistant AD Strategic Communications & Content Development

2:30-3: Walk back to Knight Hall

3: Dismissal 

 

Thursday, July 11

9:30-10: High School Sports with Sam Hopkins, County Sports Zone 

10-11: Video with Josh Davidsburg, Senior Lecturer, Merrill College 

11-noon: Play-by-Play with Adam Pohl, Bowie Baysox

12-1: Lunch at Stamp Student Union  

1-3 (split group): eSports w/ Nathan Stevens, Broadcast Production Lecturer, Merrill College

1-3 (split group): Work on camp stories
