Ivy A. Lyons
Ivy A. Lyons is a doctoral candidate with cognate studies in the Communication Department and in the Digital Studies in the Arts and Humanities (DSAH) graduate certificate program. Their work aims to better understand the intersections of identities, journalism practices and ethics across traditional media, podcasts and social media platforms.
As a burgeoning public-focused scholar, Lyons has participated in panels for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, moderated discussions for professional journalism organizations and presented as a guest lecturer at D.C.-area institutions. Lyons has also found a home in teaching media history and general education classes, as well as serving the broader educational community. So far, they have been supporting and instructing courses on journalism history, speech, digital humanist inquiry and mass communication theory.
Lyons continues their studies at Maryland after contributing to award-winning coverage at WTOP News in Washington as a digital writer and editor turned freelance producer, as a staff assistant to political leaders around the U.S. Senate, and communications consultant to nonprofits inside and outside of the D.C. metro area. Now they aim toward a dissertation and work that evaluates and complicates normative practices in journalism and mass communication with an eye toward often underrepresented communities.
