Gea Ujčić
Gea Ujčić is a Ph.D. candidate and a scholar of media coverage of violence and marginality. Ujčić has a cognate in urban anthropology and a particular interest in digital humanities and gender studies. She received the Fulbright Scholarship (2020-22), the P.E.O. International Peace Award for Women (2020-21), the Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award (2025) and the Aylward Scholarship (2024). Ujčić was twice recognized with Merrill’s Gurevich Award for International Students.
Ujčić’s dissertation research focuses on media coverage of violence against women in Croatia and beyond. It analyzes media narratives and suggests trauma-informed, sustainable interventions into worldwide journalistic coverage of marginalized people. Ujčić is proficient in multimodal qualitative analysis, including critical discourse analysis, thematic analysis and critical techno-cultural discourse analysis.
Ujčić regularly presents her work at the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conferences and the AEJMC Midwinter Conference. Her work regarding media freedoms and democracy-building was presented at the Joint Journalism and Communications History Conference. Ujčić has taught JOUR452/WGSS452 Women in the Media for five semesters and is a passionate lecturer with high student satisfaction rates.
Ujčić successfully participated in multiple international projects and exchanges, including the competitive visual storytelling workshop led by Arizona State University Professor Bill Silcock, the Hear Me student radio conference in Podgorica, Montenegro, and a semesterlong Erasmus+ student exchange at the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies at the University of Warsaw in Poland.
