The University of Maryland Counseling Center has collaborated with the Philip Merrill College of Journalism to provide clinicians that work specifically with journalism students in Knight Hall. Merrill College's embedded counselor provides the following services:

  • Mental health appointments for Merrill College students.
  • Consultation with Merrill College faculty and staff who are concerned about a student’s mental health.
  • Outreach programming tailored to the needs of Merrill College.

Evan Klein is a licensed mental health professional employed by the Counseling Center who works specifically with the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

By placing counselors onsite, the Counseling Center makes it easier for Merrill College students to get mental health services, and offers more direct access for faculty and staff to consult with a mental health professional about how to best support students. Additionally, being embedded in Merrill College provides the context needed to tailor services and programs to the unique needs of journalism students.

To schedule a clinical appointment with Evan, you can use the online scheduling system or contact him via email at evank@umd.edu to schedule. Merrill College students can meet with Evan on Mondays, Wednesdays, and the first and third Fridays of every month.

Evan is not currently available for unscheduled sessions with students. Urgent services are available to all UMD students in-person at the Shoemaker Building during business hours or by phone at (301) 314-7651 outside of business hours.

Your visits with your embedded counselor and any other Counseling Center staff are confidential. Your counselor will NOT share information about you with your program’s faculty, staff or anyone else.

Just like with all Counseling Center services, meeting with the embedded counselor is free of charge.

Just because you are a Merrill College student does not mean your appointment has to be with the embedded counselor. Additional Counseling Center services and providers are available for all UMD students at the Shoemaker Building.

The embedded counselor is available to consult with Merrill College faculty and staff regarding any concerns they may have about a student’s mental health and how to best support the student. The embedded counselor may also provide general guidance on best practices for bolstering student mental health and wellbeing within Merrill College.

Yes! Evan provides outreach programming focused on mental health education and awareness tailored to Merrill College. Programs are available for student groups, classes, program departments and other groups of faculty or staff by request. Regardless of the audience, the focus of this programming will be on improving student mental health and wellbeing. To request an outreach program, contact the embedded counselor or submit a Counseling Center outreach request.
