COLLEGE PARK — Professor Linda Steiner, associate dean for faculty affairs and diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, has established the Linda Steiner Endowed Graduate Research Award in Journalism with a gift to the college.
This endowed fund will provide much-needed support for Ph.D. students enrolled at Merrill College. Funds may be used for research expenses associated with the completion of the degree program — such as travel to conferences, the acquisition or collection of data, dissemination of research findings, honoraria, software for data analysis and attending workshops or seminars on advanced data analysis techniques.
“Working with Merrill College Ph.D. students has been gratifying and inspiring," Steiner said. “For me, working with our Ph.D. students is the currency of the realm. Now I’m repaying some of that ‘currency’ because I’ve seen how students are constrained by lack of sufficient support.”
“Professor Steiner is generous with her time and wisdom in support of our Ph.D. program and the students and faculty who make it great,” said Merrill College Dean Rafael Lorente. “It is impressive and humbling that her generosity will now extend in perpetuity to support generations of students and scholars to come. She is a model for us all.”

Steiner, a longtime professor at the college, became associate dean in 2023. She previously served a term as director of the University of Maryland's ADVANCE program, which is part of the Office of Faculty Affairs. She is a past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and a fellow of the International Communication Association.
Her research interests include media ethics, feminist theorizing and the conceptions/roles of women in the media workforce, especially journalism.
