They investigate issues of national importance at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism and learn to look beyond the box score at The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism. The Howard Center for Investigative Journalism allows students to work with news organizations and universities across the country to report stories of national and international importance.
Povich Center
The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism prepares students to be innovators and leaders in all facets of sports media. Its experiential curriculum and public programs elevate and amplify discussion of race, gender, politics and the world.
Capital News Service
Overseen by professional journalists, Capital News Service is the University of Maryland’s student-powered news organization with bureaus and news teams in Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington and College Park.
National Association of Black Journalists
NABJ, headquartered in Knight Hall, is an organization of journalists, students and media professionals providing quality programs and services to, and advocating on behalf of, Black journalists.

FAQs: Merrill College Fall 2020 Semester
(UPDATED 8/28/20) 1. Will Knight Hall be available for journalism students to use as a study space this fall? Will the News Bubble be open? Our goal throughout the coming semester is to keep our students, staff and faculty members healthy. Knight Hall will be fully open in the fall for the courses being taught either face-to-face or in a hybrid format. While there may be a few evening courses held in Knight Hall, the building will normally be open only during general business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Merrill College Master's Student Riin Aljas '20 Awarded Scripps Howard Fellowship
COLLEGE PARK (3/XX/20) — Riin Aljas ’20, a master’s student at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, has been awarded a 2020-21 Scripps Howard Fellowship in data reporting, the organization announced XX. The Scripps Howard Fellowship is a 12-month program in conjunction with the Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy and ProPublica’s New York City newsroom.

By Jummy Owookade ’20 While COVID-19 has forced much of the sports world to a standstill, sports journalists have to find a way to tell their stories. That was an overarching theme during The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism’s first virtual panel, held Wednesday night via Zoom.
