COLLEGE PARK — The University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism made several staff additions and adjustments ahead of the 2024-25 academic year, Dean Rafael Lorente announced.
Merrill College has named Kaitlyn Wilson the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism’s new collaboration manager. Wilson, a 2011 Merrill College alum, had previously been assistant director of the college’s Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism and a Merrill adjunct lecturer. In her new role, she will also manage the college’s journalism contest entries and work with the business office.
Kate Yanchulis replaces Wilson as Povich Center assistant director. Yanchulis, a 2011 Merrill College alum, will help plan and execute reporting projects, research, events and programs designed to nurture the next generation of sports journalists. Yanchulis has worked as a senior editor at The Sporting News and Just Women’s Sports in addition to reporting and editing roles at the Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia), The Washington Post and Sports Illustrated.
Lillie Clepper joins Merrill College’s staff as student services supervisor. Clepper has experience leading students of various age groups from middle school through college. Before joining the University of Maryland, she was working in civic engagement and education in Washington, D.C. She previously completed a year of national service with AmeriCorps NCCC.
University Relations hired Verna Gibson as the college’s new program manager of alumni relations and development. Gibson, a 2016 Merrill College alum, has held development and giving management positions at multiple organizations, including the Reporters Committee For Freedom of the Press and, most recently, Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center.
The UMD Counseling Center hired Evan Klein to be an embedded counselor to work with students at Merrill College and the School of Public Policy. Klein has experience working as a Licensed Counselor within various outpatient mental health programs in Denver, Colorado, with a focus on teen and young adult populations.
